If you took your driving test on or after the 1st January 1997 you will only have B (car) category on your licence. Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kg maximun authorised mass (MAM) - allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM or a trailer over 750kg MAM providing the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

If exceeding this limit you must pass a further DSA practical B+E trailer test.

The B+E trailer test requires a higher driving standard to the normal car test. To take the B+E trailer test you must have a current licence with B+E provisional entitlement on it.

No theory test or medical is needed to take the B+E trailer test.

B+E Trailer Test includes:

• Eye sight test (reading a registration plate)

• Show me - tell me questions

• Reversing exercise 

• Controlled stop

• Drive - approx 1 hour long

• Un coupling + re coupling exercise
